What actually drives the price
- Care level, not just the room. Most communities charge a base rate plus a care charge determined by an assessment. Two residents in identical apartments can pay hundreds of dollars apart.
- One-time community fees. Many communities charge a move-in or “community” fee — commonly $1,000–$5,000. These are often negotiable, and we ask.
- Room type. Companion suites can cut memory-care costs significantly; private one-bedrooms sit at the top of every range.
- What triggers an increase. The question families forget to ask. We ask it on every tour: exactly which changes in care move the monthly price, and by how much.
How Buffalo families actually pay for it
- Income and savings — Social Security, pensions, and retirement accounts cover the base for most families.
- The house — proceeds from selling the family home are the most common way a monthly gap gets closed. If the house needs to be cleared out and sold, tell us; we help families coordinate that too.
- Long-term care insurance — if a policy exists, we’ll help you understand what it actually covers before you tour.
- VA Aid & Attendance — a pension benefit many veterans and surviving spouses don’t know exists. Depending on circumstances it can add well over $1,000 per month toward care. If your parent served, mention it in the first call.
